When the debate concluded, Mandan Mishra accepted the outcome with grace and eventually became one of Shankaracharya's foremost disciples. Truth was victorious, but no one was defeated.

Ancient Rome nurtured a similar ideal. The Senate existed because public affairs demanded discussion before decision. Once debate concluded, the institution moved forward collectively. No society can survive if every disagreement becomes a permanent civil war.

Contrast this with the digital public square of today.

Social media platforms promise to connect humanity. Ironically, they are fragmenting it.

The reason lies not merely in human behaviour but in the invisible architecture of algorithms. These algorithms are designed to maximise engagement—our attention, our emotions and the time we spend online. They quickly learn our preferences and begin feeding us content that confirms our existing beliefs. Every click, every "like" and every pause while scrolling becomes a signal to reinforce our worldview.

Two citizens can inhabit the same country and yet live in entirely different realities. Each receives articles, videos and opinions validating their convictions while rarely encountering thoughtful arguments from the other side. The algorithm quietly becomes editor, teacher and companion.

What emerges is not dialogue but parallel universes.

This phenomenon, often described as the "echo chamber" effect, is profoundly changing the nature of public discourse. Earlier, disagreement compelled people to refine their arguments. Today, disagreement often leads to unfollowing, blocking and retreating into communities that think alike. Debate no longer seeks understanding; it seeks applause.

Perhaps the greatest casualty is the very idea that one can change one's mind.

Indian philosophy never regarded changing one's view as weakness. To abandon error after honest inquiry was considered intellectual courage. Today, however, social media rewards certainty over humility, outrage over reflection and identity over evidence.

This cultural shift is affecting more than politics.

Our schools and society increasingly celebrate only success. Children are conditioned to believe that winning is everything and failure is unacceptable. Social media amplifies this message by displaying carefully curated lives in which everyone appears happier, wealthier and more successful than reality permits.

Previous generations experienced hardship differently. They accepted failure as part of life's rhythm. They stumbled, recovered and looked towards tomorrow with hope. Today's young people often experience every setback as a personal catastrophe because they are constantly comparing themselves against an algorithmically manufactured illusion of perfection.

It is therefore unsurprising that anxiety, loneliness and depression have become defining challenges of our age. Mental health is not merely a medical issue; it is increasingly an information ecosystem issue.

This brings us to one of the defining ethical questions of artificial intelligence.

If AI systems increasingly shape what billions of people see, think and discuss, should their only objective be maximising engagement? Or do they owe society a broader duty?

Modern AI ethics usually speaks of fairness, transparency, accountability and privacy. These principles are essential. But perhaps they are incomplete.

Algorithms should also be evaluated by a simple civilisational question: Do they strengthen society's ability to live together despite differences?

Imagine recommendation systems that occasionally introduce well-reasoned opposing viewpoints rather than reinforcing existing biases. Imagine platforms that reward respectful disagreement instead of outrage, evidence instead of slogans, curiosity instead of certainty. Such systems might reduce engagement metrics slightly, but they would strengthen democracy, social trust and mental resilience.

Technology is never value-neutral. Every algorithm embodies a philosophy of human behaviour. The algorithms we build today will shape the character of the next generation.

India's civilisational inheritance offers an important lesson for the age of artificial intelligence. Knowledge grows through dialogue. Wisdom grows through humility. Truth emerges when opposing ideas meet with respect rather than hostility.

Perhaps the next great challenge before AI is not to become more intelligent, but to become more conducive to human flourishing.

As citizens, educators, policymakers and technology companies, we must ask ourselves a simple question: Should algorithms merely tell us what we want to hear, or should they help us become wiser?

The answer to that question may determine not only the future of artificial intelligence, but also the future of civilisation itself.

For a civilisation that gave the world the ideal of "Satyameva Jayate" and the tradition of Shastrarth, the choice should be obvious. Truth is not discovered by silencing the other side. It is discovered by listening to it.
